EXERCISE

The population as a whole is becoming more sedentary (desk jobs are overtaking manual ones). We are a lot less active than our ancestors were, they went out and hunted their food down, whereas we just have to go to the supermarket to get it, not quite the same battle is it?

Obesity levels are increasing at an alarming rate, as is diabetes levels and a lot of it can be avoided. We just need to move more than we are at the moment, starting with 30 minutes 3 times a week (that is just 1.5 hours out of 168 in a week) it is really not that much at all.

It can be small things like walking to work, or walking to the shops, or just do it for fun. Build that up over time, it really is true for exercise that the more you do the more energy you have and the more you want to do. It is a real win/win situation and you can walk anywhere at any time to start you off.

It is just a case of little and often so what are you waiting for? Physical activity reduces risk for eight conditions, according to the Centres for Disease Control; exercise can reduce your risk of:

  • Heart disease
  • Stroke
  • High blood pressure
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Obesity
  • Depression
  • Breast and colon cancer
  • Osteoporosis
